Write it down. Watch the pattern appear.

A 7-day food & bloating diary that fits on your fridge door. Log what you eat, rate how the next hour feels, and by Sunday the repeat offenders are usually staring back at you. Doctors love this thing.

Prints in 2–3 pages, black & white friendly.
  1. Log every meal, snack and drink — honestly, including the sauces, dressings and gum. Triggers love the small print.
  2. Set a timer when you finish eating. One hour later, circle how your belly feels: calm, noticeable or rough.
  3. After seven days, circle every “rough” and look one line left. Whatever keeps appearing next to them is your shortlist.
The 1-hour check-in:calm — barely thought about it  ·  ○ noticeable — waistband has opinions  ·  ○ rough — puffy, tight or uncomfortable. Rate the hour after eating, not the whole day.

Reading your week

Four things to look for on Sunday night:

  • Repeat offenders — the same food or ingredient sitting next to two or more “rough” check-ins. That’s your test-first list.
  • Portion effects — fine after a splash of milk but rough after a latte? Dose matters with most triggers; that’s a clue, not a contradiction.
  • Time of day — mornings calm, evenings rough regardless of food points at rhythm and meal size rather than one ingredient.
  • The notes column — stress, short sleep and cycle days genuinely move the needle. If rough days cluster there, the food may be innocent.

Then test: pick the top suspect, swap or shrink it for a week (the swap finder has gentler stand-ins), and keep logging. One change at a time — change five things and you’ll never know which one worked.

Bloating diary FAQ

Why rate how I feel one hour after eating?

Because that’s when the story starts. Swallowed air shows up almost immediately, while fermentable carbs usually make themselves known one to three hours after a meal. A one-hour check-in catches the beginning of the reaction while you can still remember exactly what you ate — and keeps the routine easy enough that you’ll actually do it.

What should I write in a bloating food diary?

Everything that goes in your mouth, honestly and specifically — including sauces, dressings, drinks, gum and snacks, because triggers love to hide in the small stuff. Add the time, then rate the hour after eating as calm, noticeable or rough. The notes column is for context: stress, poor sleep, cycle day, a rushed desk lunch.

How long do I need to keep a food diary to see a pattern?

One honest week is usually enough for a first pattern — repeat offenders tend to show up two or three times in seven days of normal eating. If week one is inconclusive, a second week firms it up. What doesn’t work is logging only the bad days: the calm days are half of the evidence.

Can I bring this diary to my doctor?

Please do — it’s exactly the kind of record doctors and dietitians wish patients brought. A week of meals with timed reactions turns a vague ‘I get bloated a lot’ into something a professional can actually work with.
